Source: EU likely to prolong economic sanctions against Russia
BRUSSELS, Jun 15 (PRIME) -- The E.U. is likely to prolong the economic sanctions against Russia, but the decision has not been made yet, E.U. sources told reporters on Wednesday.
“The prolongation of sanctions against Russia will be discussed by the member states, but these decisions are made by the E.U. You know the framework in which these decisions are made, they have not changed, nothing has changed. So we expect that the sanctions will be prolonged,” a high-ranked E.U. representative told reporters.
E.U. foreign ministers will meet on June 19.
Another E.U. source said that a formal decision to prolong the sanctions against Crimea will be approved by the council on June 19. “But you asked about the economic measures. They will be in force until the end of July, and the decision is in the process of approval, but it is not on the agenda of the council meeting,” the source said.
The E.U. prolongs sanctions against Crimea each year. They expire on June 23 this year. The E.U. member states coordinated prolongation of the sanctions on June 6, and now the E.U. Foreign Affairs Council is to approve it without discussion.
